With the demand for societies' production of many countries, the infrared zoom system has been widely used in many fields, further more, it is becoming an important research part in the world. The naissance of infrared zoom system design based on the theory of visible light zoom system design. It can make not only a general observation in short focal, but also a careful observation in long focal. Then, owning to its advantages, infrared zoom system has more used in different fields.In the paper, some zoom methods and design methods have been summed up. Then, the design method of infrared zoom system is proposed, and the realized course of zoom system is deduced in theory, the essential conditions are achieved. In the design course, the zoom ratio and zoom quality are necessary to consider, and the zoom system and the compensation system are also necessary to consider. After that, the rational zoom ratio curve is obtained, the zoom changing course is more simple.The negative compensation system in mechanic compensation methods is used in the design, and four times continuous zooming IR optics system is obtained. As the total length of the system has a strict demand, after the research and analysis on diffractive optics properties, the diffractive optical elements (DOE) is used in the design of the system, the total system length is cut down, the system design demand is satisfied. However, to raise the transmission of the energy of IR system, the film system that is satisfied to the demand of system is researched. For the final result, zoom is stable, zoom quality is fine, cam curve is smoothness, the design demand is satisfied.
