With the development of the fiber technology and the fabrication of special fiber, the fiber lasers and amplifiers show a drastic evolution. But it is well known that the fiber dispersion is a primary barrier for the short pulse generation. Thus, various technologies have been developed to generate short pulse, dispersion compensation technology, for example. However, these technologies demand explicit dispersion character and in general long-length fiber's dispersion property is well measured. In this dissertation, the short-length fiber dispersion parameter is measured based on the all fiber Michelson interferometer, and the dispersion properties of tapered fiber is numerically analyzed.In this paper, the basic theory and method of fiber dispersion measurement, including the interference principle, classification and numerical methods, are summarized. The restricted parameters of the spectral interference system based on the Michelson interferometer, such as wavelength resolution of dispersion measurement, the minimum source waveband, measurable bandwidth of the dispersion curve, the minimum fiber length are derived from the interference theory after considering the problems occurring in the experiments. In addition, the characteristic equation of the three-layer-structured cylindrical waveguide is derived by using the vector method and the scalar method respectively. Meanwhile, the dispersion coefficient of tapered fiber is numerically calculated with the scalar method.In the experiment, based on Michelson interferometer and spectral interference technique the system for short-length fiber dispersion measurement is built. The dispersion properties of 1.8 m standard signal-mode fiber (SMF28), 1.6 m Nufern 1060xp fiber, 1.3 m single-mode ytterbium-doped fiber and the reflected fiber grating was measured and their dispersion coefficient for a given wavelength was obtained...
