The digital battlefield environment is foundation of battlefield digitalization. As a kind of important battlefield environment information, terrain data is used in a large number of military applications.In the paper, the author discusses the theories and methods of extracting DEM based on scanned topographty maps. Main contributions of the dissertation include:1. The main flow of contour lines extraction and vectorization is analysed. The algorithm of hue threshold approximation is presented to extract contour lines. The scheme of vectorization is established. During the research of contour lines thinning, an improved parallel thinning algorithm is used. The author analysis the causes of contour lines fracture and different connection methods are used for different spacing fracture.2. The author studies the construction of constrain Delaunay trianglation, considering the problem of limitation of flat triangle and crossed triangle.3. The errors that influence the quality of scanned topographty maps are analyzed. A new method of DEM quality control is proposed in the paper. In order to test the availability of DEM data, the author puts forward a set of quality inspection program.4. Based on the thoughts and algorithms, a prototype system is designed and realized.5. The problems of the digital battlefield construction of the Armed Police Force are expatiated. The important action of using DEM data is explained by three cases in the progress of compaignand and training.Finally, the research work is summarized in conclusion and the futher work is pointed out.
