The router is the most important infrastructure of Internet. Traditional core router can not meet the multidimensional requirements of new-generation Internet for the limitations of system architecture of hardware and software. Cluster router will have good development perospect for its higher physical ports densities, more scalable forwarding capacities, more powerful computation abilities and lower lifecycle costs. The rapid expansion of Internet burdens BGP routing protocol greatly, but the implementation of traditional BGP is based on single process or single thread and there is no real sense of the software scalability. Therefore, in order to solve the performance challenges faced by BGP protocol and to meet the needs of next-generation Internet, the research on how to achieve BGP distributed processing on the router cluster environment is of important practical significance.Started with analysis of the BGPD structure and its routing information base of open source routing protocol software Quagga , this paper, firstly, has illustrated that the increase of peer session number is the main factor which caused the bottleneck of the computing and storage resource of router control panel, so followed with made scalability test of the peer session of BGPD and marked out the computing and storage resource consumption of router control panel in different peer session scale, which been defined as the benchmark of evaluating the BGP protocol performance. Secondly, based on the distributed computing model in the router cluster architecture, the paper has been involved in the designing of the structure of the cluster-based distributed BGP protocol.Thirdly, aiming at the problem of peer session allocation among distributed BGP protocol agents ,this paper realized a kind of algorithm of the allocation of payload balance of agents and implementation in payload dispatch manager, which fully considered the spending of prefix computing and transfer and improved the scalability of distributed BGP protocol and enhanced its stability. At last, the paper has made performance and scalability test and outcome analysis based on distributed BGP prototype system and given us the performance ratio of distributed protocol to traditional protocol. The above-mentioned work of this paper will be an important reference in the designing and implementation of more high-performance BGP protocol in the core router, it also provides a detailed reference design and rich and powerful experimental data in the practical application of the distributed BGP protocol in the high-end commercial cluster routers.
