Image information is an important way for human beings to recognize the world, but in actual applications, because of transmission system limitation and other reasons (especially refers to H.264 standard codec in this thesis), it often causes various distortion of the image information. Therefore, it is necessary to research an objective evaluation method, which can evaluate H.264 standard codec coding and decoding quality.Firstly, this thesis researches and analyses human visual system's basic characteristics and pickes out a more outstanding method (SSIM methods) to evaluate image quality on the basis of the characteristics. Then analyzes and summarizes the key technology and features of H.264 coding standard and chooses the proper video source testing H.264 video codec quality . Secondly, this thesis creatively developes an objective evaluation method of video codec quality: by comparing the differences between the original video and the video which has been coded and recoded, construct a function ,which can demonstrate the differences, and its value represents the quality of codec. In addition, another key point of this thesis is to achieve the objective evaluation by software, which contains the following: the design of video acquisition system, finding out the most similar frames, the design of the evaluation index and verifing the effectiveness and reliability of the method. Finally, after synthesizing the SSIM method and video codec quality evaluation methods, designs objective quality evaluation system of H.264 standard video codec.
