Applications of small satellite formation flying need to solve the problems of technologies such as formation keeping and reconfiguration control and attitude coordination control. In this condition, it is needed to build the simulation environment in order to test and verify the solutions to complex key technologies with low cost and risk.This thesis is concerned with several aspects of small satellite formation simulation which are listed as follows:Firstly, the describing method of relative dynamical for formation flying was studied. The Hill equations and corrections of Hill equations under the influence of J2 perturbation are discussed emphatically; several common formations are analyzed, and the relative dynamical equation of every formation is given out; moreover, the principle and relative dynamical models of formation keeping control and attitude coordination control are studied.Secondly, several common simulation methods and the history of distributed simulation technologies are introduced; also, the thoughts and main characteristics of HLA, the three aspects composed of rules of HLA, interface specifications and OMT are discussed. Run-Time Infrastructure is introduced in the thesis. It is illustrated that HLA distributed simulation technology can meet the design requirements of satellite formation flying and has important value for application in simulation of small satellite formation flying.Thirdly, the characteristics of small satellite formation simulation task are studied emphatically, distributed simulation technology based on HLA is adopted, and the structure, interface and OMT of distributed simulation platform for small satellite formation flying are designed. The whole federation was divided into five federates including manager federate, interface federate, satellite federate, observer federate and visual federate. The structure and interface of every federate are designed and programmed to realize. Formation keeping control, attitude coordination control and orbit computation modules are imbedded into the simulation platform. The extensible distributed simulation platform is realized which is suitable for multiple configurations can verify solutions to key technologies for formation keeping and attitude coordination control of satellite formation flying. At last, small satellite formation simulation platform is utilized to simulate circle sub-satellite point formation and altitude imaging formation. It is verified that formation keeping control and attitude coordination control modules are effective.
