Visualization is an important means for analyzing large and complex data field, it has become an indispensable tool for many fields such as scientific research and engineering design. Because driect volume rendering can show entire dataset at one time, it has become one of the most important volume rendering methods. However, sometimes it is very difficult to uncover detail inner features only by adjusting transfer function.Volume clipping technology can complement transfer function to uncover detail inner features,it is of great value for uncovering detail inner features. The dissertation aims at volume clipping technology, the main contents are as follows:(1) Through a literature review, the dissertation systemactically examing different volume clipping technology's advantages and disadvantages, then points out the dissertation's research topic, which is arbitrary volume clipping technology based on GPU.(2) Since clipping texture based volume clipping technology is flexible and convenient,the dissertation research clipping texture based volume clipping technology to realize arbitrary clipping of 3D volme data. Firstly clipping texture generation alogorithm is presented,which coverts clipping geometry model to the corresponding clipping texture, then implements clipping texture based arbitrary clipping method on GPU.(3) The concept of multi-resolution texture is presented in this dissertation, which just to resolve the contradiction between clipping texture and limited texture memory. Then multi-resolution texture generation alogorithm is studied, and the technology of arbitrary volume clipping which based on multi-resolution clipping texture is discussed simultaneously.(4) The algorithm in this dissertation is embedded in VTK which is a mainstream visualization package, then SVIP (Scientific Visualization Integrated Platform) is developed based on expanded VTK ,the result is satisfied .
