Sign language is to use different hand gestures to imitate an image or a syllable in order to construct a word or an idiom. Gesture is one kind of body language used by deaf-mute people to communicate with each other. For normal people body language is an auxiliary communication tool, however for those disable people it is a primary communication method. Nowadays our country has more than 20 million deaf or mute people.While in its designing process we use 30 Chinese Pinyin characters as recognition objects. The system's recognition technology is based on MEMS accelerometer. Its designing idea is using MEMS tri-axial accelerometer to obtain the trajectory of each finger while it is moving in the space, further more realizing recognition. To begin with this article firstly introduces the domestic development on sign language recognition technology. Finally the article gives our own design plan—sign language recognition system based on MEMS accelerometer. This article makes a brief introduction about MXR9500 tri-axial MEMS accelerometer, their working principles and inside structure, and then gives the practical improvement on their designing and application.After explaining the design method of this system, the article also elaborate on the various parts of the system design of hardware such as sensor signal acquisition circuit, sensor installation, the system status indication circuit, the system of communication circuits and so on. Besides the hardware design, the article also gives algorithms design of the system. Finally, based on the algorithm in theory, this essay gives programming of the system. In this part the article provide software flow chart and code analysis of main part of program. At the end of essay, based on analysis of system parameters and running results, we give the future improvement plan of sign language recognition system.
