A Contrastive Study Of Stylistic Features In China Daily And New York Times

The language of news reporting is the most typical journalistic English.The study of the stylistic features of journalistic English has been flourishing.People use a language in one of the three ways:as a native language,as a second language,or as a foreign language.However,a comparative study of English news written by native speakers and those by speakers of EFL has not been thoroughly carried out.English in China is a foreign language with the purpose of international communication.In China,English newspaper plays an ever increasingly important role in information transference,and through it,we know what is happening around the world and also we make world know what is happening here in China.The following four English-language newspapers are published in China:China Daily,the 21^stcentury,ShangHai Star,and the People's Daily.However,China Daily has the largest circulation.The paper has an average daily circulation of more than 300,000 in about 150 countries and regions.Thus,in my paper I take it as the data for analysis.This paper will make a contrastive study of 50 articles from two newspapers-China Daily and New York Times respectively.Two newspapers both have the largest circulation in its region and are distributed internationally.Each pair of articles from two newspapers is reporting on the same event with almost the same length.The paper will take a stylistic analysis of these articles in order to find out the similarities and differences.This initial analysis is mainly quantitative with aid of a Word Count & Frequency Statistics Software based on the programming language C # using regular screening and other key technologies.The software is mainly for the purpose of calculating the frequency of each word.After the quantitative analysis,the paper will carry out a qualitative study to explain the findings from the above analysis, especially the differences.
