As the attention to the safety of traffic and transportation, tire inspection has already became an issue cared by every tire manufacturer. Imported tire inspection equipment is expensive and does not apply to domestic production situation. As a result, the development of low-cost, high-performance X-ray tire inspection equipment with independent intellectual property right becomes an urgent problem to be solved. This paper systemically introduces our X-ray tire inspection software - XII Tire Inspection System. We focus on the design and realization of the real-time automatic defects recognition module. Through thorough study of characteristics of tire defects, we deny several commonly used methods based on texture defect detection. Then a new thought is proposed, which is designing different algorithm according to different defect's key characteristics, then optimizing and integrating the algorithms. On cord defects, a new algorithm that uses normalization, binarization, thinning, then skeleton details abstraction is proposed. On bubble defects, according to its regional gray level characteristics, an algorithm which firstly filter, then search for possible defects regions and region growth to segment the image, finally check the result is proposed. On belt defects, an algorithm use multi-channel Gabor filter to identify the defects is proposed. On impurity defects, a morphological method is also proposed. All the algorithms proposed in this paper are encapsulated in XII. Through application and testing, the feasibility and effectiveness is proved.
