The goal of speech enhancement is either to improve the perceived quality of the speech, or to increase its intelligibility by getting as clean speech as possible from the noisy one. As an effective solution to noise pollution and an important way to improve the SNR, it has been applied for many areas in recent years, such as speech recognition and voice communication.Based on the characteristics of speech signal and noise signal, this paper analysis VAD(Voice Activity Detection) technology and noise estimation algorithms. Also, many different speech enhancement approaches are studied in the literature under various configurations and operating hypotheses. This paper proposes a speech enhancement algorithm which is based on auditory masking property, including a new noise estimation algorithm which can track the change of noise spectrum immediately. This algorithm also introduces the adaptive filter noise cancellation algorithm to get rid of the music noise.The experimental results indicate that the algorithm proposed in this paper has such advantages: (1) It can track the change of noise spectrum immediately to get the accurate noise estimate. (2) Due to its efficacy and simplicity, it can guarantee a real-time processing. (3) It can adapt the time-varying channel and low SNR(Signal to Noise Ratio) condition. (4) It can get rid of most noise in noisy speech and fulfill the intelligibility, perceived quality of the speech.The single-channel speech enhancement system designed in this paper has been applied for noise reduction of the short-wave radio.
