The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is the unique inter-Autonomous System (AS) routing protocol. It's clearly that the convergence of BGP is highly important to the performance of the real network. As a result, an effective method to monitor and analyze the BGP convergence is required warmly. At the beginning, this paper discusses the fundament of BGP, the characteristics of BGP convergence and the classifying theory of routing events. By detailed studies the technology of active data collection, the technology of passive data collection is thought up. Combining the routing events theory and passive data collection technology, this paper presents a method of monitoring and analyzing BGP convergence by data collected passively. In this method, we can get the BGP routing information from the BGP packets which are passively received by the probe machine placed in the Internet, and then we analyze these packets to get a series of parameters for estimating the actions of the BGP convergence. In addition, the monitoring part of the method is composed of passive data collection technology and events tracing scheme, and the analyzing part of the method gives a group of parameters to estimate the performance of BGP convergence in the network. The programs of the method are done in Java. Subsequently, the function of the method is proved through the simulation test with SSFNet and the experiment carried out in a small size of real network. Both results show that the method has good performance in monitoring and analyzing the BGP convergence of a network without taking obvious instabilities into it.
