Heterogeneous wireless sensor networks assume the heterogeneous features of structure and function for sensor nodes, compared with general wireless sensor networks with homogeneous nodes, it can prolong the lifetime of network, enhance network connectivity, mensurability and invulnerability. It has become an important issue to design an efficient key management scheme by use of the heterogeneous features of nodes in HWSN. Dynamic key management technology is suitable to provide a higher credibility of key management service for HWSN, it can real-timely update the pair-wise key and the group key according to the dynamic changes of network, which make the attackers difficult to get efficient information of keys through node capture. In this paper, we study on the models and the protocols of dynamic key management in HWSN.Firstly, after simplified summarizing the security issues of wireless sensor networks, this paper systematically reviews the key management schemes and protocols in wireless sensor networks. The contents involve the general problem, the evaluation standard, the classification standard and the existing typical cases etc. of key management schemes, in which the dynamic key management protocols is emphatically analyzed and summarized. Then the heterogeneity of HWSN is studied, and a security model and a dynamic key management model of HWSN is proposed on the basis of existing dynamic key management schemes in this paper. As the research emphasis, for the problem that the security of HWSN would be greatly threated by the captured central nodes which can trigger high energy consumption and low update efficiency in the key update process, we proposed LASSB which is a key management protocol based on location-aware and secret sharing. LASSB has the following characteristics such as location-aware, secret sharing, dynamic update, light-weighted and so on. The simulation results show that compared with the existing schemes, LASSB can significantly improve the security of gateway node layer and reduce the energy consumption consumed in the update process of central nodes. At last, we summarized the paper, and make the prospect of the future research.
