New product is collaboratively developed by the cross-organizational, geographically-distributed, and multi-disciplinary teams with the rapidly grown of competitive economy and fast development of Internet technology. Collaborative design is a promising paradigm, in which the performance of product is thoroughly considered and the designers from different groups can work collaboratively. This advanced approach can reduce the time and cost spending on the product development, as well as improve the quality of product. The conventional CAD can not satisfy the new requirements, so the development of visualization system supporting collaborative design based on Internet is necessary.This thesis focuses on Collaborative Design Visualization Platform (CDVP) and its related key techniques. The prototype system of CDVP is also developed.Firstly, related components and operation mechanism of data stream are thoroughly analysed based on the bridge technology between HOOPS and geometric modeling kernels ACIS. The display technology of distributed 3D model for collaborative design and interface exchanging method of heterogeneous data are researched. The implementation method of 3D model visualization and interoperation that can support various 3D formats are discussed.Secondly, the multi-dimensional message passing scheme and real-time synchronization approach in collaborative design are studied with the supporting of HOOPS/Net. The message format which is fit for the characteristic of collaborative design is customized using the message-driven operation and token-ring mechanism, and the relevant solutions of 3D data replication and operation synchronization are proposed. Then, the synchronized updating of lightweight distributed data and the rapid passing of various message are realized.Thirdly, after analyzing existing system structures of collaborative design, the framework of visualization platform is built based on a mixed collaborative structure, the function structure and operation procedures are designed, and the realization mechanism of related supporting tools (such as collaborative markup) are disscussed. Then, the prototype system named CollabVue is developed, and some examples are given to illustrate the running of the system.Finally, the conclusion and further research are presented.
