Wireless sensor network is a new type of wireless networks application. It is one of the most popular research fields in all these years. Wireless sensor networks have been widely applied in many different fields, such as military field, civil field and scientific research. This thesis introduces some new MAC protocols aiming at the special application environment, which is the underwater environment. At the beginning of this thesis, we introduce the characteristics of wireless sensor network and then discuss about some typical MAC protocols. After concluding the advantages and disadvantages of these protocols briefly, this thesis introduces new MAC protocols according to the characteristics of different types of underwater wireless sensor networks. To underwater wireless sensor networks with dense deployment, data collision problem, especially the collision caused by hidden terminals is prominent. In addition, the interference within communication channel is serious. This thesis discusses a new MAC protocol without RTS-CTS handshake mechanism in three-dimensional space, which has large amelioration in data collision avoidance aspect. To underwater wireless sensor network with sparse deployment, the propagation delay is the main problem. This thesis introduces a new MAC protocol, which makes use of the propagation delay and solves the problem effectively. In the simulation, we make a comparison between the new protocol and ACMENet on the same condition. The simulation result shows that, this new protocol is much better in energy cost aspect.
