Wireless Sensor Networks(WSN) are being deployed for a wide variety of applications, including military, national security, countering terrorism, fighting natural calamities, environment monitoring, traffic control, patient monitoring and manufacturing,. With the further research and wide application of WSN, security has aroused great concern. As we all know, the sensor nodes have limitations on computing speed, power energy, communications ability and storage space, and they are general disposed in appalling environment, no-man zone or enemy positions. All the above facts put forward great challenges on the design and security management of WSN security program.This thesis analyzes the security features and needs of wireless sensor networks. Current researches and its deficiencies are summarized first, which is followed with a WSN security model that can defense intelligently, dynamically and actively. A system based on risk-analyze is also put forward to provide risk assessment for security design and management of different applications in wireless sensor networks.The main contents of this thesis are as follows: limitations of WSN condition, security vulnerability, security features, new challenges WSN faced from attacks, threats and so on; main idea, orientation and results on the security research of WSN nowadays; based on the foundation of Intelligent Sensors, researches towards a comprehensive, intelligent, initiativeand dynamic security framework to protect WSN; under the overall security framework, a clever security protection system is built to make security assessment and protection design for various WSNs in different applications; with the application of NS2 simulation, tests and verifications are made on WSN security models that are equipped with intelligent, initiativeand dynamic defence.Based on relevant theory foundations, this thesis has the following findings: a conclusion is made on the main thoughts and directions of WSN security researches---network safety and protocol safety. It also elaborates research findings on security from protocol stack security, all kinds of security measures, offensive and defensive measures and so on. It proposes to integrate safety strategy and technology system onto the security smart module of a sensor. An overall solution is provided by establishing an intelligent, initiativeand dynamic defense security model. It also helps to provide a comprehensive and universal security strategy for various applications of WSN. Different applications of WSN require various security needs, so a risk assessment method is applied to calculate security needs of differed sensor networks quantitatively. An assessment system based on need grading is established to provide references that give guidance on the design of WSN security measures, security analysis, security program assessment and security management.This thesis gets these conclusions: WSN differs from traditional network. Under a combined influence of a complex security environment, various security needs and its own limitations, the WSN faces many challenging problems. In a complex security environment, a variety of security needs , its own limitations and other factors combined, the safety of WSN faces many challenging problems. In view of the problems on current security research for its singleness in strategy and technology, this thesis provides an intelligent initiative dynamic defense model which suits well as an overall solution for WSN security. Based on the risk assessment and used for different applications, this security strategy assessment system is a solution for the differences from individual WSN security needs. Tested with NS2 simulation on one of its attack, this integration of model and assessment system proves to be successful in WSN security design and protection performance assessment.
