At present, Critical Discourse Analysis is being widely used in news discourse. This thesis mainly uses the theories put forward by Fowler, Fairclough, Kress in 1979 and combines with Halliday's systemic-functional grammar to analyze language in the hard news reports. This thesis mainly does research on two questions. (1) How is language used to convey its implied meanings in the hard news? (2) How does language act upon audience's ideology? The thesis uses critical discourse analysis and systemic-functional grammar to analyze the three kinds of hard news which are food crisis, disaster and economic crisis news reports from the perspectives of transitivity, modality and transformation. The transitivity analytical results show that in food crisis, disaster and economic crisis news reports material process accounts for the highest proportion. And the main function of the hard news is to state the happenings of events. Verbal process constitutes a moderate proportion. In verbal process, the authorities'or officials'speeches or statements are quoted and reported, which has the powerful effect and persuasive influence. Mental process occupies the least proportion. Hard news reports try to avoid subjective attitudes of the reporters, so only a few mental processes appear in hard news reports. Relational process, existential process and behavioral process take up the similar and small proportion in the hard news reports. They are the associated ways for the reporters to accomplish the hard news reports.Language in hard news is required to be true and objective. However, it is unavoidable to reflect the subjective attitudes of the reporters. Modality analysis shows that a few modal verbs exist in hard news. Transformation analysis shows that passivation and nominalization are usually used in hard news reports to achieve the effect of impersonality. The application of this approach will influence audience's understanding of the ideology in the news reports.
