With the development of image and video information technologies, stereo image technologies develop rapidly. Now it has been one of the hottest issues that the scientists are studying on. Stereo image technology has very broad application prospects, can be used in scientific research, military, educational, industrial, medical and many other areas. So the research on the stereo image is very valuable.The paper has done the theoretical and experimental study on still stereo image from the following aspects:Firstly, gave a brief introduction of the development history of stereo image, three ways of acquiring stereo image, the encoding and compressing method commonly used and the achievements of stereo image display technology.Secondly, analyzed the principle of stereoscopic acquirement by human eyes from different direction, such as physiology, geometrical optics, psychology and so on; established a simple mathematical model, calculated the distance threshold of depth perception. At the same time, the relations between the parallax and observation distance are also analyzed.Thirdly, in order to evaluate the progressed image better, several traditional subjective and objective plane image evaluation methods, image evaluation methods based on human visual system and improved image quality evaluation models are introduced.Fourthly, based on the two-view stereo imaging system, the affect of luminance, contrast, resolution and chroma to the display of stereo image has been studied, commensurate test curves are also been painted. It has been found that compared with other factors, luminance are more influent to stereoscopic, and also proved the important conclusion that chroma difference between different views almost has no effect on stereo imaging. With chroma substitution, the data amount of stereo image has been effectively reduced.Finally, the affect of edge information to stereo imaging has also been studied. And found the result for the first time that when the edge information of two views are removed, compared with the original image, the image after composed looks more comfortable and has better stereoscopic,although the quality of the image is slightly lower. The conclusion has certain significance on the study of the future compression and transmission of the stereo image data and the improvement of stereo image display.
