MIMO radar is a kind of new radar system brought forward at the beginning of this century. Due to applications of spatial diversity, waveform diversity and other new technologies, MIMO radar can obtain better probability of target detection and parameter estimation performance compared to the traditional phased array radar. This paper mainly aims at DOA estimation problem in monostatic MIMO radar system. At first introduced three typical methods for DOA estimation: beam scanning method, the maximum likelihood method and MUSIC algorithm into MIMO radar. Then the Cramer-Rao Bound (CRB) for MIMO radar DOA estimation and complex amplitude with co-located arrays in multiple targets scenario was derived. It shows that the CRB depends on both the steering vectors of transmit/receive arrays and the correlation matrix of transmitted waveforms. The CRBs with different waveforms and inter-element spacings indicate that MIMO radar has better DOA estimation performance compared with phased array radar. Finally, waveform optimization was carried out based on the CRB matrix, the resulting beam pattern and optimized CRB validate its effectivity.
