H.264/AVC becomes the most advanced video coding standard because of bothhigh coding efficiency and network friendliness. But the new encoding technologiesused in H.264 increase computation load of an encoder or a decoder dramatically.Under multiple reference frames and multiple macro block mode technology whichcause to computation load of H.264 system, the thesis combines theoretical analysiswith experimental results and implement a H.264 motion estimation algorithm basedon search range restriction.According to the time relativity and space relativity whichvideo sequence has, the algorithem restricts the motion search range in other referframes by motion estimation result in the nearest refer frame, and restricts the motionsearch range by motion estimation result of upper mode block when current mode blockis doing motion estimation.it reduces the number of candicate search pointgreatly, shorten the time of motion estimation and raise encoding efficiency. On the basis of JM8.6 reference model, compared with classical method, thealgorithm implemented by this thesis saves about 10% on the number of candicatesearch point and reduces less 0.1db on PSNR.Weighting encoding time,PSNR and coderate, the H.264 motion estimation algorithm based on search range restriction showsspecial performance in many respects.
