Free Viewpoint TV is a new interactive 3DTV, which allows users to choose their own viewpoints freely, and can present 3D video. In the paper, two important modules for multiview video coding and virtual viewpoint systhesis in the Free Viewpoint TV system, are mainly studied.A coding gain can be achieved for multiview video coding by using inter-view prediction, which is compared with traditional monoview video coding. In the paper, its reference prediction structure is described, and a mathematical model is proposed to analyze the random access performance of this prediction structure. Moreover, based on the given model, the relation of the random access performance and the length of the group of pictures is studied with the coding efficency, and then the way how to determine the length of the group of pictures is found. However, the additional inter-view prediction in the reference prediction structure causes the coding complexity of multiview video coding increased and the random access performance decreased. In this paper, some changes are made to the reference prediction structure by restricting the selection of reference pictures, which results in lower coding complexity and improvement on the random access performance at the cost of rare coding loss.The study on the virtual viewpoint systhesis is carried out in ray-space. Considering the directionalities of the ray-space representation, two novel interpolation methods are proposed, one of which is based on row and the other is based on sliding window. The experimental results have shown that less computing complexity can be achieved and operating time can be saved. Moreover, the rendered pictures are clearer with rather small foldover in lengthwise boundary to some extent.
