The technology of video object segmentation has always been a hot and difficult research point in the digital video process field. So far there have been thousands of segmentation algorithms, and there have been new theories applied to the video segmentation.Among all the video objects, people are usually interested in moving object, and the moving object segmentation technique is widely used in real life, such as video monitoring, video telephone, video conference, as well as constantly developing video entertainment etc.. Therefore, this paper studies video segmentation technology, and it focuses on how to separate a moving object from the video sequence quickly and accurately.Based on the research of many segmentation algorithms, the paper designs a method for moving object segmenting which is based on frame difference and block match. First, in the initial frame, the moving object is detected by frame difference and high-order statistics, then in the following frame, the moving object is divided with the method of block match. The method overcomes the shortcoming that it's hard to choose seed and growth criteria in region growing algorithm, and it also avoids the complexity and large compute quantity in optical flow. It is confirmed that the method in the paper is an efficient and accurate segmentation method by experiment result.Finally, the method is applied to the detection of needle broken of industry sewing machines. Experiment results show that the method can detect the occurrence of needle broken real time and accurately.
