The development of 3D CAD technology has speeded up the process of enterprise informatization, and promoted the business development of productive forces. With the co-design becoming trend of manufacturing industry in the future, the exchange of information about product model among heterogeneous 3D CAD system will become a new problem, which all enterprises must face. In co-design, the designers at different place need to share resources effectively in time. So information exchange is necessary between different sites. The key of information exchange is how to transfer one designer's design intent to another one completely. Through information exchange, other designers' activities can be perceived. It makes co-design without interfering comes true. So a set of information exchange norms and appropriate mechanism for express, which provide an effective way of data description for the sharing, exchange and succession of heterogeneous information, are needed. They also make co-designers can understand the design information each other with no obstacle. With them, information can be exchanged successfully.In this paper, an XML-based description, which is used to describe 3D CAD model information, has been brought up. It is called Mid-model here. It realized model information exchange with design intent among heterogeneous 3D CAD system. The Mid-model includes position data and local coordinate of reference surfaces, data and bound relationship of metasketch which make up for sketch, form and process of building a feature. All the information is in hierarchy Frame. The Mid-model satisfies the need of design intent information exchange among heterogeneous 3D CAD system.Through the Mid-model, this subject has realized information exchange between JhSolid and SolidWorks using object-oriented technology, 3D geometric coding technology and XML technology. The subject was preceded on the platform of Windows, and used the development tool of Visual C++.The programs have been verified correct and feasible through coding, debugging and testing.
