Picture in picture which can displays many pictures from different channels simultaneously are used in the system of analog TV. As the fast development of digital technology, the analog TV are replaced by the digital TV gradually, so the implementation of picture in picture on digital TV become more and more important. In addition, picture in picture can combine multi-channel video signals into one, and also save the storage space. So, picture in picture is used for digital video widely.The the thesis presents the the picture in picture algorithm based on MPEG-4 video bitstreams, and displays pictures of 4 channel video bitstreams in one picture successfullyThe main works of the thesis are organized as follows:(1) The background of picture in picture is described roughly, and the development and progression of the digital video compression standard is introduced.(2) The principles of MPEG-4 video codec is introduced in detail, and the coding method of MPEG-4 video codec is explained. Taking XVID as an example, it gives lots of details about each module in the codec.(3) The primary principle of the transcoder for spatio resolution, the key model for PIP, is introduced. It gives a transcoding architectures with partly codec with motion compensation in Frequency domain, and researches the primary algorithm of the transcoding architectures, including down-sample in DCT domain, motion compensation in DCT domain, motion vector mapping, macroblock mapping and so on.(4) The transcoder with PIP functionality under VC++ 6.0 integrated development environment is implemented, and some simulation results are given.The thesis implements picture in picture of four video bitstreams successfully. The algorithm has a good balance between algorithm complexity and the quality of picture.
