Recently, internet is popular in people's life and more and more machines are connected to the internet. On the other hand, the new media service based on the internet emerged. So the internet capability becomes the rare resource. In order to adapt the rapid improvement of internet application and provide more effective service quality, the network capability must be improved. With the improvement of fiber technology and T-bit switch technology, the network bandwidth and router throughput have been effective resolved. But the router's transmit efficiency becomes the bottleneck to limit the development of network. Many router developers and researchers have done a lot of work on how to improve the look up and forwarding rate. Improving the look up rate and introducing more advanced and reasonable router structure are two key elements for improving forwarding rate. Based on the analyzing routing algorithms and researching on router structure, this dissertation puts forward the conception of the sixth generation of router structure. Using TCAM and Multi-core processor, an effect router forwarding engine is designed. The main work of this dissertation is as follows:This dissertation analyzes the development trend on IP address structure, presents a survey of lookup algorithms common used, then, makes a comparison in details.Based on the deep discussion on the router structure, the sixth generation router structure is putted forward. The greatest different of the sixth generation router structure from earlier five generations is the using of the Multi-core processor whose ability is very powerful.TCAM has been a necessary resolution for the high speed transmit engine. A great deal of research has been achieved on TCAM. This dissertation uses FPGA, TCAM and DDRII SDRAM to achieve a routing lookup engine. This method is a very good one to support 1 million IPV4 FIB and 10G POS.
