With the increasing requirement for the computing capability and speed, parallel computing has become one of the most important research areas of computer science. However, the process of developing parallel program is very complex and energy-consuming. How to decrease the complexity of parallel programming and accordingly increase the parallel program developing efficiency has become one of the key problems in parallel computing area. For giving a solution for the problems above, this thesis proposes the conception about model-based visual parallel programming, and describes the design and implementation of a parallel programming oriented visual modeling system that is based on the conception.This thesis analyzes the current research about simplifying the process of parallel programming, and studies the current methodology and technology of visual parallel programming. It also introduces some popular visual parallel programming environment, and analyzes their advantages and disadvantages. Based on the current theory of visual parallel programming, a conception about model-based visual parallel programming is proposed. The thesis describes in detail the programming model, the process model and the communication model which are used in the process of model-based visual parallel programming, and also explains what role each model plays in the parallel program development. On the basis of the theoretical research, the thesis presents the design plan of the parallel programming oriented visual modeling system. The details of system functionality, system organization, constructing blocks design, constructing rules design, model design, view design and layered view design are also described. Good extensibility and flexibility of the system is also considered in the design plan.Based on the design, the thesis implements the parallel programming oriented visual modeling system called ParaModel. The implementation utilizes the Eclipse plug-in technology as well as Graphical Editor Framework. The ParaModel system has good extensibility and friendly user interface. It could simplify the process of parallel programming and improve the efficiency of parallel program development.
