Building realistic 3D face models and animation is a challenging task in the field of computer graphics. With the development of movie stunt, electronic games, video telephone and virtual meeting, the research in this field has stood in the forefront. In this paper,we present a face modeling and animation system based on the previous work of this field, realize the method to construct a face model, employ the texture mapping method to enhance realism and realize simple facial animation. The animation is driven by keyboard, and hold interfaces to realize visual driven 3D face modeling. Some hand gestures would be defined to drive the animation, when they were recognized in another research of hand gesture recognition.First of all ,this thesis gives the future application of the field and the present research interiorly and overseas, elaborates and compares all kinds of techniques in the field of face modeling and animation. Then uses the other 3D modeling software to get the 3D datas of the generic face model, and generates the generic face model with OpenGL.On the basis of facial structure and MPEG-4 standard, the thesis defines facial feature points that show not only the whole outline of a face, but also the local character of the facial components.According to the data structure of the generic face model, the thesis uses a simple method of 3D point marking to make the marking results accurate. To enhance realism of the model, this thesis also employ the texture mapping technique, and realizes simple rigid body animation. The thesis presents a efficient method to produce the modeling and animation quickly, the result looks realistic. The method can be exploited in many applications such as natural human-machine interfaces, virtual collaboration work, virtual learning and teaching, and so on.
