Virtual roam technology is an important branch of virtual reality, the application development are very quick in many kinds of profession such as the architecture, the tour, the game, the aerospace, the medicine and so on. As valuable 3 "I" properties - sense of immersion, interaction and Imagination, it breaks through limitations of pure 3D animation system. Virtual campus is an important implication of virtual roam technology. Virtual campus can support resource management, environmental program, development of school and remote access to the realistic university, etc. We can say, the virtual campus will be an important developing direction of the digital informationization of the campus in the future. This paper recommends the structure and technology of the virtual campus system and provides a frame structure of the virtual campus system that can meet basic demand, and on this basis, further investigates and explores several technologies which supported the system of virtual campus: Set up three-dimensional-model to buildings and environment in the campus; studies and realizes the conversion from 3DSMax model file to the OpenGL application environment; analyzes and designed the most basic technological solution to virtual roam interaction and provides the course of realizing using OpenGL; Detailed analyzes the principles and algorithm of collision detection using recursive space polymerization; Finally, analyzes the system optimization technology. The system realizes roaming the systematic basic function. Through testing, algorithm of collision detection using recursive space polymerization increases the speed and accuracy of collision detection considering the implement experience and the deficiency of our system. Finally, we make a simple prospect to several aspects needing further investigating for the future in the thesis.
