Human face is the window of communication in the real world. With the development of virtual surgery, movie making, face recognition etc., 3D facial modeling and facial features extraction are becoming the developing trend of computer graphics. In the premise of analysis the developmental status, significance and applications, the thesis presents the basic methods and key processes of 3D facial modeling and facial features extraction based on the related facial morphology theory, by using the computer visualization technology. It mainly includes:1) Facial features extraction from 2D image. Define facial feature points in the 2D image based on studying MPEG-4 standard, and add feature regions detection to the traditional feature extraction process. It locates some key feature points by using color analysis and gray-scale regional integration projection methods.2) Facial features extraction from 3D model. Locate key feature points of 3D model by adopting the profile region detection method based on organ distribution rules, organ parameters template definition, and boundary curves fitting method.3) Specific 3D facial modeling. Resume the 3D information from the 2D feature points according to computer visual principles, and then use the scattered data interpolation method to make the universal model matching the specified model.4) Realistic 3D facial modeling. Construct the texture by using the front and profile image, and define the texture coordinates through the projection method to achieve texture mapping.5) System design and implementation. Based on the theories and researches above, the realistic 3D facial modeling and features extraction system has been implemented by Visual C++. Net and OpenGL.
