With the development of science and technology, people's requirement on the acquiring, expression, storage and reconstruction of information is getting higher and higher. In the field of digital video, as we become more and more demanding with the resolution and real-time display, the mainstream mono-display could no longer meet our needs.The cluster-driven tiled display wall, the resolution of which is extendable and ultra-high, provides a feasible solution to the high-resolution digital display. This paper puts forward a digital display and decoding technology based on the cluster and the tiled display wall, realizing the MPEG-2 video parallel decoding and displaying system.Since the levels in, the MPEG-2 video show a hierarchy structure, parallelization could be carried out at different levels. We analyzed the parallelization at each level, namely, the video sequence level, the GOP (Group of Picture) level, the picture level, the slice level and the macroblock level. Then the advantages and disadvantages of different paralleling schemes were compared from the perspective of computation and communication. A hybrid granularity hierarchical parallelization technology which could balance the advantages and disadvantages of the mono-level parallelization was thereby given. We parallelized the video decoding in the picture level and the macroblock level respectively, balancing the computation and the communication of nodes.We also integrated the seamless display technology into our hybrid granularity hierarchical parallelization system. It ensured that the picture on the tiled display wall was one integral picture instead of separate blocks. Several techniques were applied to the seamless display system, such as the geometry correction, the edge blending and the color calibration. Based on the analysis above, we studied the technology to integrate these methods into our parallel video decoding and displaying system.Besides, we designed and implemented the parallel video decoding and displaying system using the top-down approach in software engineering. In this section, we first decomposed the system into several modules, demonstrating the flow charts. Then the difficulty in the implement was explained. We also optimized the system for the special platform.It was proved that our parallel video decoding and displaying system partly satisfies the requirement of scientific visualization. Finally, we also analyzed the methods to extend the stereoscopic video. The passive stereoscopic video would be added into our system in the future.
