IEEE 802.11 is the most important international standard for WLAN, and its MAC layer protocol adopts the mechanism of Distributed Coordination Function (DCF), which is based on CSMA/CA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance) to perform its fundamental function, wireless medium access control. The research purpose of this thesis was to optimize DCF and make distributed terminals efficiently share limited wireless channel and thus to improve the whole system performance of IEEE 802.11 MAC.The self-adaptive optimization algorithm based on estimation of the number of competing terminals was analyzed and studied in this paper. According to the estimation of the number of competing terminals, the optimized minimum contention window was calculated to improve the performance of IEEE 802.11 DCF in this algorithm. The experimental results showed that the algorithm is superior to the standard IEEE 802.11 DCF.The self-adaptive optimization algorithm based on Access Traffic Awareness was presented in this paper. Different from other algorithms, the relationship between channel access traffic and channel access states and channel access degree of competing terminals was considered in the algorithm, and thus the access parameters of IEEE 802.11 DCF were adaptively adjusted and the whole system performance of the protocol based on Access Traffic Awareness was improved. The paper gave the specific operation mechanisms of the algorithm and computer simulation model. The simulation results proved that the above formula and algorithm were accurate and effective.
