In this thesis, the design and implementation of a STB (Set-Top-Box) product, including hardware and software, is presented. The product has accomplished for a famous international company in China. The one of noticeable characteristics of Set-Top-Box (STB) is to access the Internet by television and phone line plus STB with low cost, easier and cheaper than traditional method with PC. The STB hardware mainly consists of two subsystems: the ARM7 subsystem and the MODEM subsystem. C language is used here to perform the application, file system and interface of the embedded system, realizing a new television- Internet browser and a new usage of network STB.The ARM7 subsystem includes CPU module, Memory module, Audio-Video module and MMI module. The MODEM sub-system includes digital and analog parts. Each module of the schematic diagram and the signal connections between the two sub-systems are elaborated, while the power supply system of the STB explained. The thesis also provides the PCB design of STB, the PCB Layout diagram, and some suggestions about drawing layout of the PCB as well as how to generate the PCB net-list. In addition, the key problems the author met during debugged the system and its solutions are included. The chapter five introduces the software design of the STB system, especially the interface part. The BOOTLOADER source code is also provided and analyzed. At the end of this thesis, the whole content of work is summarized meanwhile giving the outlook of future task. All the hardware schematic circuits are provided in the appendix.Because the author mainly tasks in this project are the hardware research and development of the system, the thesis relates mostly to the hardware parts of the STB rather than software parts.
