A Mobile Ad Hoc Network is a daff collection of mobile hosts that can communicate with each other without any a pre-established infrastructure. Therefore, Mobile Ad Hoc Network has the property of rapid infrastructureless deployment which makes it convenient to many environments, such as battlefields, conferences, or some emergency rescues. Howerver, the unique characteristics of Mobile Ad Hoc Network, such as open peer-to-peer network architecture, shared wireless medium, stringent resource constraints, and highly dynamic network topology, make them very vulnerable to malicious attacks. Security has become a primary concern for the deployment of Mobile Ad Hoc Network in a hostile environment. The unique challenges of security design in Mobile Ad Hoc Network clealy make a case for building multifence security solutions that achieve both broad protection and desirable network performance. Traditional security concern is mainly focused on a special aspect of the security framework, and most of their work is on the basis of plain architecture. Hierarchical architecture, which is strong scalability, has better network management capabilities, is more suitable for military networks and is not detailed very much currently. From the view of practical application, hierachical architecture of Mobile Ad Hoc Networks can attain higher security and practicality in the large-scale network. In this paper, we have a deep research into hierarchical security framework. Our contributions in this paper are threefolds.First, we have a detailed discussion of the fundamental security problem of protecting the multihop network. We identify the security issues related to hierarchical defense architecture for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, discuss the challenges to hierarchical security design, review the state-of-the-art security proposals that protect the Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, and decide design principles for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks security architecture.Second, main security function modulars for hierarchical Mobile Ad Hoc Networks are discussed. In this topic, an in-depth defense architecture for hierachical Mobile Ad Hoc Networks is proposed. The proposed architecture is consisted of three mechanisms which are distribute authentication, intrusion detection and security management. A Weight Distributed Group Key Management Framework is proposed.Third, we design a distributed cooperative intrusion detection framework that suits hierarchical Mobile Ad Hoc Networks. As a case, a detection model for routing attacks on AODV is designed. Detainled analysis and simulations are also carried to validate the effectiveness of our detection model for attacks on AODV.As an important integral of some project. Our efforts in this paper do form the basis for farther research. At the some time, our work of security for hierarchical Mobile Ad Hoc Networks will favor Mobile Ad Hoc Networks organized with plain structure.
