With the improvement of railway locomotive technology and the acceleration of locomotive operation, it is necessary to improve the reliability, security and efficiency of the locomotives. It is an important technical measure to improve the traffic safety and efficiency of the locomotives that real-time monitoring the important equipments in locomotives and recording fault characteristics. The distributed fault detecting system becomes the best scheme of locomotive fault detection, because the advantages of less signal cables and large detection range it has can totally fulfill the needs of compact structure of the locomotives and uneven location of equipments.The fault detection recording terminal is the core of the distributed fault detecting system. It obtains the network data, records the fault characteristic data and communicates with PC. It integrates network technology, information technology and computer technology in its own system. The performance of the fault detecting system is determined by the capabilities of communication and storage of the terminal. Consequently, the terminal must have a well fieldbus network, large storage capacity and reliable communication interface to PC.The fault detection recording terminal is designed based on the high-speed signal processor TMS320VC5509A. In this system, the universal network card is used to implement the fieldbus communication function, so that the compatibility of the network interface is enhanced. At the same time, the data flow is managed by the fault detection recording terminal, and the network nodes send data frame periodically, therefore the collision of transport is avoided and the network reliability is improved; Fault characteristic data are recorded into large-capacity flash in accordance with FAT16 file system, therefore the storage capacity of system is greatly increased and the storage management method is optimized. Mass storage device protocol is implemented based on USB interface. The system behaves like USB disk in Windows System. So the operation of extracting the recorded fault characteristic data is easy, as same as to copy the files from the USB disk.Through the scheme, hardware and software design and the system debugging, the fault detection recording terminal is implemented eventually, and has been successfully applied to SS3B NO.0641 Locomotives in Kunming until now.
