Virtual reality technology has played an important role in industry & manufacture, digital city, virtual building design, training & education, exhibits and entertainment and so on. By using VR technology, applications from games, home design to Battlefield simulation, now can animate objects of real world which are always height cost into virtual world on computer where you can manipulate or edit them like what you treat them in real world. All of these applications are based on the background of the breakthroughs of real-time rendering technology, because users interacting with virtual scene can immerse themselves inside it only when the systems have high real-time capacity.Because the VR application's domains are expanding everyday and the complexity of application contents are also growing fast, the requirements of realistic real-time graphic rendering technology are growing enormously, especially because of the improvement of the acquiring and producing technology of great scale data recently, great scale terrain data are common used in virtual scene which force designers to deal with massive data. So it's a very important topic of computer graphic on the research for efficient graphic rendering technology that are applicable in the common computer graphic hardware to accelerate the rendering speed of complex scenes and models and finally sole the conflicts among the speed, quality and complexity.The thesis discusses the technologies of how to create a great scale and complex virtual scene, tries to supply a computer-generated virtual scene which is high realistic and effective. In order to achieve this, 1)we analysis the real-time rendering methods for terrain, implement a real-time terrain rendering algorithm which is proved by our experiment to be satisfying the requirement of real-time rendering for great scale terrain data.2)To make our terrain more realistic, we discuss how to generate procedural texture for terrain, how to apply bump texture mapping for terrain, how to solve the memory problem brought by great scale texture of high resolution. 3) Research on the technologies of how to build natural sceneries like roads, sky, fog.
