With the rapid progress of information technologies, computer games have became a very popular way of digital entertainment in the modern society. Traditional games bring entertainment to users, together with some criticism. People easily indulge themselves in computer games, which is not conducive to physical and mental health. Under this situation, virtual fitness game comes into being. Virtual Network Marathon (VNM) is one kind of such game system. In VNM, elliptical machine is chosen as fitness equipment, which replaces traditional keyboard and mouse devices. When user is running on the machine, he will see that his avatar is exercising in the virtual scene, or competing with other participants through networks. In this way, the system provides users with physical exercise as well as entertainment.In this paper, design of VNM's framework is described. Some typical problems during development as well as corresponding solutions are discussed in detail.(1) System function and the overall framework. The system is composed of two parts, client and server side. The server is used for real-time data processing and user management. The client is developed based on Lucid game engine, which includes graphics rendering, network communications, user management, resource management modules, and so on.(2) Scene modeling in VNM. We present in this text some techniques in natural scene modeling and character modeling techniques. Sky and terrain modeling are introduced in the natural scene modeling, as well as certain noteworthy points, which cover skinned mesh, image-based and video-based modeling.(3) Resource management in VNM. Resource management pattern designed for VNM is introduced firstly. Then resource management policies under this pattern are presented including hardware data management, scene file management, video management and system configuration information management.(4) Implementation of virtual crowd. Related techniques for rendering virtual audience and virtual player in VNM are proposed, such as path planning, collision detection, human rendering and so on.
