Virtual MO library, a new type of archieve system based on Magnetic Optical of medical picture access and communication, has been designed and carried out. It has good access qualities of MO and avoids the disadvantages of present PACS, such as single function, slow response and no remote access. It deals with imaging of Magnetic-Optical discs, sharing of internet data, accessing to imaging files, diagnoses of DICOM pictures and so on. It is even more important that MO basing on those characteristics and application will really become the carrier of electronic medical records and develop more deeply in PACS.Having analysed the functions of the key points of constructing network storage server, we decide to construct a virtual MO library, which is based on the characteristics of sharing storage mediums in PACS, to manage and store the information of patients. Virtual MO library which is constructed on common PC platform and uses hard discs as storage mediums has boundless capacity. It also uses the ways of virtual image files to manage and store the information of each patient as a unit according to the capacity and forms of MO. Since MO is rewritable, it can replace traditional medical records. In VML, according to the characteristics of accessing image files, a special image files stream protocol is designed with quick responses and high transmission efficiency. It simplifies the command numbers in iSCSI protocol so that improves the efficiency of bandwidth. During the procession of reading data, the functions of the system are improved, using two-level Cache. What's more, it carries out the comparing data test in relation to present PACS construction. It divides data into two parts: examining information and imaging files. Examining information includes patients'basic and related information while imaging files are the reflections of MO's contents. Each image file represents various examining images of a patient. This system does not put image files directly into database, but directly stores them in VML server. Database merely keeps the corresponding path information so that client server accesses to it conveniently. There are inquiries and corrections of varied tables in client server operating interface. VML is high efficiency and low cost. Its embryonic form has come into being with development.
