Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a new scanning technique in nuclear medical research. PET is a functional imaging modality at molecular level and provides valuable insights into biochemical, physiological, pathological or pharmacological process. Its application can be found in a wide area ranging from basic insights into the normal physiology and disease processes to drug development and early response to anticancer and gene therapy.Micro-PET is a smaller but higher resolution device, which is suitable for studying small animal models of human diseases. The first micro-PET prototype in China has been designed and implemented. This thesis introduces the whole system frame, and then focuses on the implementation of the coincidence subsystem and data transfer subsystem. These two subsystems were intergraded in one Coincide-Board, which based on a FPGA core. This Coincide-Board receives data from front-end electronics via the BLVDS interface, completes the coincidence, and transfers data to the control PC with TCP/IP protocol, based on embedded Ethernet technology. The Coincide-Board was designed as a 6-layers board, and special attention was paid on the high-speed digital circuit design. This prototype of micro-PET has passed the commissioning and been proved that it can obtain the expected resolution. A second prototype of micro-PET is under proposal, and the design of the coincidence system, which was elaborated in this thesis, would be adopted with small modifications as its universal property on design.
