With traffic plays an increasingly important role in our daily lives, theproblems of safety and efficiency need urgent solution. So the intelligenttransportation system comes into existence. This paper introduces thestructure of the intelligent transportation system, and the characteristics, the application scope and research direction of its subsystems(road-vehicles communication and inter-vehicles communication). For thefollowing two reasons, this study focuses on inter-vehicles communicationsystem: First, the inter-vehicles communication system is not used in theexpensive infrastructure communication system; Second, the road-vehiclescommunication system is now relatively mature technology. Theinter-vehicles communication system based on ad hoc network ischaracterized by flexible setup, fast-development, without necessity for thehelp or existence of any infrastructure, low cost and robust, and has largecommercial and social value. The research of this article is based on technology of Ad hoc. Becauseof the rapid topology changes in vehicle communications network, choiceof routing protocol is one of the focuses of this study. In some literatures,AODV and DSR are relatively effective protocol to the network. So thispaper simulates the performance of two protocols in the vehiclecommunications network for comparing the best one. As a result, AODVhas more performance advantages than DSR.The following paper is based on the routing protocol AODV, thesimulation shows the inter-vehicles communication system based on Adhoc network used in high-speed scenes of city, suburban and subway isfeasible. This paper also simulates single-lane and multi-lanecommunication environments for further study. These results analyse theinfluence of the multi-lane to network performance. As the technology of ITS becomes more and more mature and newtechnologies develop so fast, we believe that ITS will be applied in our reallife very soon. And this simulation can be the basis and reference of thefurther research for vehicular communication.
