Research And Application Of Voice Technology In G-TELP Test Platform

As the reform progress of English teaching, speaking ability is now receiving more and more attention. But it is not easy to organize an oral test, especially a big one. To solve the problem, this paper proposes a solution in which speech synthesis and recognition technologies are introduced into the system. TTS (text to speech) technology could transform text materials into voice so we can replace the tape recorder, which is used in traditional method of listening test. The SALT-based (Speech Application Language Tags) voice recognition technology could help realize the online oral test and upload the voice file to the server. This paper describes the application of speech technology in the G-TELP (General Tests of English Language Proficiency) test platform.First, the paper introduces the current research situation of voice technology and the meaning of the project, discusses system requirements, functional design, system architecture design and database design according to the software engineering theory, analyzes business logic layer, data access layer and user interface of the platform in detail.Then, the paper dedicates two chapters to discussing the application of voice technology in G-TELP test platform, lists the common ways to implement TTS and voice recognition and also the occasions in which they are used, introduces the existing standards in speech technology field, discusses how to embed voice function into the traditional web application by using the speech application SDK and speech server, analyze the characteristics and working principle of the embedded speech engine in speech server, discusses the interactive model of SALT application and describes the listening and oral test module in great detail.At the end of this paper, we conclude our work and puts forward the future work. G-TLEP test platform breaks the conventional model of English testing by integrating all parts of a paper into a single system. For this reason, we can say that G-TELP is a truly paperless online platform. Compared with the conventional model, it improves the efficiency of teaching stuff and also saves lots of manpower. We hope that our work will be useful to our academic counterparts.
