With the rapid development of network storage technology and its extensive application, the performance analysis and study of various kinds of network storage system is becoming a hot topic at home and abroad currently. Consequently, the importance of various network storage protocols is also obvious. From the initial Fiber Channel protocol to the newly developed storage protocols which use IP network to transmit block data, such as iSCSI protocol, simplification and low-cost of the storage protocol has become a trend.AoE (ATA over Ethernet) protocol is a new type of network storage protocol based on Ethernet. It combines Ethernet and low-cost disks together and uses the standard Ethernet to transport ATA disk commands. Therefore, it constructs a easy-to-use and low-cost local area network storage system more conveniently. AoE protocol makes the unlimited scalability to be possible. It also enables low-cost ATA disks that are used as storage devices shared by any servers on a network. In this thesis, network storage protocol AoE is studied in depth based on the Linux system. After analyzing its operation principles and protocol flow, a performance analysis to AoE protocol in theory is carried on through the establishment of queuing model. The correctness and validity of this model are confirmed by emulational test results. The result analysis shows that the AoE network storage system performance can be improved by increasing the network transmission rate and the block size transferred one time, also by decreasing disk service time.
