A large number of images come forth because of the prevalence of multimedia technology and the implementation of Internet technology. Traditional text keyword-based retrieval approach can't adapt to the demand of image data retrieval, and content-based image retrieval (CBIR) technology becomes the current research focus. In this paper, according to the hot point of the current research of CBIR, based on analyzing and studying the key techniques of CBIR, we mainly discuss the image retrieval algorithms based on image color feature and region feature.The core of CBIR is the features which express the content of images. Color as an important visual information of images is easy computed, stable and widely used in CBIR. A color-based image retrieval system is implemented based on analyzing the HSV and the Lab color space through histogram.Because the features extracted from whole images can not meet the need of image information retrieval, region-based image retrieval attracts more and more attention. The application of image segmentation in CBIR is discussed and region extracting through image segmentation is also analyzed. For the specialty of image segmentation used in CBIR, Clustering is discussed in detail and a novel image segmentation algorithm is adopted by region growing after clustering.
