VoIP is a real-time voice transfer technology based on Ethernet. With the extensive utilization of VoIP technology and the rise of the Next Generation Network (NGN), IP telephony systems based on traditional client/server model face various challenges with the growth of the numbers of its users, especially in scalability and single point of failure. As a decentralized network model, Peer-to-Peer network can make the full use of the resource and capability of every node in the network and provide stronger overall performance and capability, which afford a novel way to resolve the VoIP technical development direction. This thesis adopts a Structured P2P algorithm such as Chord and SIP protocol to build a VoIP architecture based on underlying P2P overlay network, considering the characteristic the VoIP technology and the P2P network. It implements user registration and call setup, user login in/out, sign in/out, session, sending or receiving instant messages, user location lookup, etc.. The telephone terminal is an embedded Linux system. The hardware system includes SamSung S3C2410X ARM9 embedded microprocessor, SDRAM, LCD driver, Codecs, network card chip, keyboard, etc.. It carry out the TCP/IP stack, voice transfer and communicatin commands and application software based on the hardware system. It has been tested that this system can realize the peer-to-peer communication over the IP network. It also get high voice quality and convenience. The system has completed a well work for future work on P2P studies and VoIP applications.
