The background of the research for the paper is for an enormous musical fountain control system of a certain square.In the resent years, with the improvement of the living standard and the advancement of the society, the requirement of inhabited environment is getting higher and higher, so various fountain projects are tremendous developed. In the squares, the gardens of the center streets or the communities of many large cities, there are unique feature fountains sprinkling among them to attract people. Among the various fountains, especially the multimedia musical fountain, it puts the feeling of vision and hearing together, and advances higher requirements for the environment artistic effects. With the extensive use of computer and modern control technology, computer identifying musical signal and intellect control become the direction of developments of the musical fountain in the future.The conventional musical fountains are defective in the computer intellect control, and a majority of the fountain systems are the programming control type. The system needs programmers off line programming preprocessing. It is not only for heavy workload, but also that the programmers can only deal with a great deal of contents in the music simply, and the processing results are lack of accuracy. Some musical fountains which can recognize musical characteristic automatically are still in the primary stage. The recognized musical characteristics are of singularity, mainly according to the volume which is the basic feature of the music. There are many problems, for example, the concordance of the music and fountain, synchronous control issues; the expressive force of the system is weak for some melody and rhythm which makes people not coziness. Recently, there are not any intellect control systems to achieve music expressive force synthesizing volume,timbre,time and rhythm in the music. This paper is based on the music characteristic recognition of the fountain to expand. The contents of the research are contained two aspects:1) automatic recognition of music characteristic for computer use;2) fountain control system based field-bus.The paper was divided into five chapters. Chapter 1 was the overview of the full text,mainly introduced in detail the subject for which the author was studied. Chapter 2 was the music characteristics analysis. In this chapter,the knowledge of the basic music theory was introduced,and put the emphasis to researsh the basic technique of expression about music, which is the various of the basic characteristics about the music.Chapter 3 was the specific study aimed at music characteristic recognition. Short time frequency and time domain processing which was in the Speech Recognition field was applied to music characteristic recognition, combining with the physical characteristics of music, and the formulas and algorithms which aim at melody, dynamics and drumbeat characteristic recognition were given out. Chapter 4 was the achievement of the music fountain control system. In this part, a deep research was done for the control technology of the fountain system. Music fountain field bus control system was constructed based on Modbus communication protocol, and the correlative software and hardware of the whole control system was accomplished. Chapter 5 was conclusion and prospect.
