At present, OBS (Optical Burst Switching) is proposed as a focus technology for switching area in communications network using IP over DWDM. Meanwhile, it is another focus that expanding the concept of MPLS (Multi Protocol Label Switching) into the optical transport network becomes OLS (Optical Label Switching). It is naturally combining to Label Optical Burst Switching (LOBS) based on the characteristics of OBS and OLS. Therefore, it is very attractive to combine OBS and MPLS over IP/DWDM network.Based on hardware platform of network processor Intel IXP1200, the design and realization of FEC assembly at edge router in LOBS network is discussed in detail in this paper. Besides, some key design issues such as the architecture, the flow of data process, memory management and queuing discipline are also investigated detaily. According to design, the development of IXP1200 is divided into two parts—data plane and control plane, and completed the function separately: completing the data classify and burst processing with microcode in data plane; initializing the system and route information in script in control plane and providing a good platform and parameters for data plane. Presently, the FEC assembly in WorkBench has been realized. The results from simulation show that FEC assembly based on IXP1200 can realize the pre-defined functions accurately. Besides, the designed edge router is capable of forwarding data streams coming from Ethernet at the average speed of about 720Mbps. Finally, in this paper, the improvement for the design is brought forward.
