The global evolution of mobile communication technology arouses great desire for diverse multimedia services from users, and therefore requires extra network facilities for service implementation. For this purpose, IP multimedia subsystem, standardized by 3GPP, aims to provide a global, access-independent and standard IP connectivity and service control architecture, which enables users to access multimedia services by using common Internet-based protocols. However, IP multimedia service development stumbles, due to the fact that the SIP protocol, which is used in ISC interface, has text-based format and high extensibility. Also, the existing capability interface, capability gateway and application platform, such as Parlay, SIP Servlet and so on, wouldn't fit in IP multimedia service development, for their complexity, inability to completely reflect IP multimedia network capability. After considerable analysis on the difficulties and weakness on existing technology, this paper would propose a brand new capability server for IP multimedia service development, and outline its basic requirements and advantages. Subsequently, this paper would cover all the designing details on view designing, capability interface designing, interface formation, interface implementation based on SIP message, and so on.This paper will thereafter, would demonstrate a prototype system built according to all the designing theory and implementation mechanism mentioned above, detailing its software architecture, major components and its interfaces, software and hardware facilities in software development process, and so on.Finally, in order to verify the designing philosophy of this IP multimedia capability server and evaluate the possibility in carrier-grade network deployment, this paper would address the testing process and testing result, respectively in function verification and performance verification of the IP multimedia capability server prototype system.
