Digital image compression has always been the hot spot in the field of information processing technology especially in the information society where 'digital' has become more and more popular. Computer networks and digital products bring people the colorful vision menu. At the same time they make it necessary to compress and coding the vast amount of vision information, in order to store and send them more conveniently.The wavelet analysis, a new subject developed ten years ago, has demonstrated the good prospect in the image compression aspect. It has abandoned the premise supposition in traditional FFT----stability, it overcome some weakness of traditional FFT, deals with thickly to the smooth part of the image; deal with meticulously to the detail part. Meanwhile, it can resolve the image on much scale, to do mufti-resolution analysis more. In this way, according to sub difference of characteristic of image of every scale, we can carry on the different treatment. The image rebuild with this method accord with the subjective characteristic of the human eye, having dispelled a block effect completely, the code efficiency of the image is improved greatly too.In this paper, we set focus on the wavelet transform code. We firstly summarize the basic theory on image code, introduce some familiar compression techniques and some international compression standards on image ; And then, we introduce the basic theory on wavelet transform code and the JPEG,JPEG2000 standard; At last, we mainly study image compression characteristic with the wavelet transform, has discussed the image data compression characteristic with the wavelet transform and the superiority in this foundation, and has produced the wavelet image encoding process. Contrasted and researched the classics algorithm, which based on wavelet transform---EZW algorithm, the SPIHT algorithm and Speck algorithm.With the advantage and disadvantage of the premise that not affect overall construction of SPIHT algorithm, under the algorithm, has made the improvement to the SPIHT algorithm, and has carried on the experimental confirmation, the experimental result is satisfying.
