Shape blending has important theoretical significance for the applications to industrial design, engineering simulation and etc. It has become a new tool for aiding design, with the development of CAID technique. By the shape blending of different products, series of creative shapes are generated, providing plenty of design material for designers. An approach to shape blending based on reverse engineering is proposed and the related key technologies are discussed in this dissertation, serving for industrial design. The main research contents are as follows:Firstly, the preprocessing methods of point cloud are discussed. The relative algorithms of point cloud slicing are deeply researched, including the determination of slicing thickness, the choice of slicing direction, the calculation of slicing data, the reconstruction of poly-lines and etc., so that the uniform slicing of point cloud is completed.Secondly, the preprocessing methods of cross-sectional data are studied, including data reduction, discrete curvature estimation and convex hull calculation. The improved algorithm base on minimum distance and that base on ray-firing are presented, for the correspondence of two groups of cross-sectional data. By adopting different interpolation methods, the cross-sectional data of new shapes is created, and the 3D shape blending based on cross-sectional data is realized.Finally, the prototype system of the algorithm is designed to verify its feasibility and validity. The infection of different methods, parameters and threshold values are analyzed by an example.
