What this paper aims to do is to analyse performance-oriented Reality TV via genre methodology. The genre analysis of performance-oriented Reality TV will be divided into two approach, text and context. On the text level, genre theory focuses on establishing a format or bringing a toolbox to television producers. Above all, television programme Super Girl is located into performance-oriented Reality TV. Then the character, setting, iconography, narrative and style of performance-oriented Reality TV are analysed according to Lacey's 'repertoire of elements' . Performance-oriented Reality TV, which is a hybrid genre, borrows elements from documentary, drama, soap opera, game show and variety show. Then, performance-oriented Reality TV is analysed in historical and social context to answer why it is so popular. There are four reasons of its popularity: the commercialisation of Chinese society and television industry, the grass-roots rebellion to elites, the attraction to young generation and female audiences and the application of new media technologies. In the conclusion, the great value of genre theory is demonstrated. |
