Microstructure Fiber (MSF), also called Photonic Crystal Fiber or Holey Fiber, is a kind of waveguide which a defect is introduced into a perfect two dimensional photonic crystal as a core. MSF has many advantages compared with conventional fiber, such as high-power transmission, high-power laser and solving the problem of limiting network velocity and capacity. MSF is possible to replace conventional fiber widely. So far, MSF is studied by research groups all over the world, however, most of the researches are on theory, and few of them are about fabrication.In such a background, this paper makes research about several related issues below: Firstly, the paper gives the outline of the development of MSF. On the basis of MSF fabrication methods, their disadvantages and advantages are analyzed to determine proper methods for different fibers. A precise drawing system is constructed. In the experiment, this drawing system can satisfy the needs of drawing, with a high precision and steady performance. Then, pure silica glasses and nonsilica glasses (such as SF6 glass) are adopted to draw MSF on the drawing system. The feasible technical route for fabrication is provided. During the drawing experiments, how to optimize the craftwork is researched, the problem of hole collapsing is solved and the inert gas pressurization method is introduced. Finally, comparatively regular MSF is made, meanwhile rather steady fabrication technology is primarily achieved.Based on the influence of drawing condition and the analyses for drawing modelling, the relation between MSF and its preform is calculated. Finally, index-guiding MSF is made from high-grade silica glass, and a much more detailed experiment is carried out. This work can offer the reference for the fabrication of high-quality MSF, and improve the fabrication technology of MSFfurther.
